Do you Swag?

Search & Win

Do you Swag? Do you think I'm crazy and/or wonder what in the name of Twinkies I'm talking about??
Well, here's the scoop (and, I'm taking this description off the actual site, because they can explain it better. Not to worry, I will later explain it in my terms):
Swagbucks.com is the web's premier rewards site. Powered by Prodege LLC, Swagbucks.com allows web users to earn virtual currency by doing the things they do every day - search the web, shopping at their favorite retailers, and by engaging in other activities such as phone recycling, submitting polls, and completing special offers. Swagbucks.com is the only place on the web to get what you want without ever having to spend a dime.

So, what does that mean? Well, basically you get paid to search! Yup, you heard me right. So, instead of using Google or Yahoo or whatever other search engine you use, use Swagbucks and earn points just for searching. You can then use these points to 'buy' prizes from their site. There's a little of everything for everyone; Toy Story stickers for the kiddos, video game equipment for dad, perfume for mom and the list goes on! I personally have been using mine to buy Amazon.com gift cards, which I'll use for Christmas gifts (there are other gift cards as well). I mean, how cool is that? You can get free stuff just by doing what you already do!
And, if you sign up using my referral code, I win every time you win! So, see...it's a win-win for both of us!
So, what are you waiting for...start Swagging (this link will take you directly to my referral sign up page)!!

Conversations with Zavion...

It's hard to believe my little man will be FIVE next month! And, also hard to believe I've been doing these since he was three! Wow, time has just flown by and while I sometimes wish I could just freeze everything, I am really enjoying watching him grow and learn.

So, stay tuned for next month's special feature 'A Week Of Zavion.' I'm planning on blogging about my special guy every day of his birthday week, so Sun Oct 17th to Sun Oct 24th (his birthday is the 19th). I have lots of fun blogs planned, so make sure to some back to check it out!

In the meantime...here's your latest Conversations with Zavion...

Z: I'd like to live in an apple tree.

M: Ok...why?

Z: Because it would be fun to live in an apple tree.

M: Why would it be fun to live in an apple tree?

Z: Because if you water the tree, you will get lots of apples and then you can eat apples all the time. You could eat your own house!!

Z: Mom, I want to be a car fixer when I grow up. I think people need car fixers, like if their air conditioning breaks or if their wheel falls off. Do you think car fixers make lots of money?

M: Hmmm...I don't know... But, how about a lawyer? They make lots of money! (Hey, a mom has to try right?)

Z: Ok, but what does a lawyer do?

M: Uhh...they argue with other lawyers & help people (It was the best I could do on the spot!)

Z: Well, I don't want to make people mad! 'Cause when I argue with you, I make you mad!

Z: Ewww!! Something stinks!

M: Yea, I think Avalee just pooped.

Z: I think Avalee just downloaded a game called, 'Stink Up the Room!'

Diary of Miss Avalee Apryl

Goodness, I guess it's been awhile since I've written in my diary! I've just been so busy lately, with Summer and all, I just haven't had much extra time!
So, let's see...where should I start? Well, how about that I'm a big girl now, like really big! When I had my last checkup in June, I weighed over 26lbs and was 33 ½” tall (they say that's 92% for height and 82% for weight...whatever all that means!). I'm tall enough to reach on the counters and on the dining room table now. And, when I use the kitchen stool, it's even better, 'cause I can reach the back of the counter! Mommy doesn't seem to happy about this, but it's really opened up some doors for me!
I'm also big enough now that I can really hold my own against my big brother! He tries to push me around sometimes, but I'm pretty tough and don't let him get away with much. I can even wrestle and play 'Tackle, Tackle' with my daddy and Z. I've gotten really good at my signature flying off the couch onto Daddy tackle!
I also love helping Mommy do chores. When she does the dishes, I try to help by rearranging the plates around or licking the extra yogurt off the spoons she forgot to rinse (silly Mommy!). Sometimes she gets frustrated (I'm not sure at who...or why...) so I shut the dishwasher door for her, to try to give her a little break. I even put away my own dishes after I'm done eating, just like my big brother!
I also like helping Mommy do the laundry. I hand her the clothes to put in the washer and she hands me the clothes to put in the dryer. Mommy always says I'm a really good helper and that she's proud of me (sometimes I try even extra hard to help and put extra fun stuff in the dryer when Mommy is distracted...)!
I really like doing everything on my own, and would rather not have anyone help me. From feeding myself to reading books to putting on my socks; I just like doing it all by myself! Mommy says I'm still little and need help, but she does let me feed myself now with my own spoon or fork! Sometimes I get a little messy, but Mommy usually cleans me up pretty quickly. Otherwise, I usually just wipe my face on my brother's shirt or the couch cushions.
I am really into reading now! I've gotten a few new books, but I also like going in my brother's room and raiding his cool library! I get special reading time at naps and bedtime, but Mommy and Daddy (and even Z) will always take time to ready to me anytime I want too. Sometimes, I just look through the book on my own, and even have a couple of my favorite books memorized.
I know probably about 30 signs now too (Mom and Dad teach me ASL, just like they taught Z)...maybe more. Some of the signs I regularly use are; Eat, Milk, Baby, Please, Thank You, Sorry and Book. I usually say these and sign them together. I have started to string some of the signs together now, and Mom and Dad even taught me to sign “May I please be excused (we have to ask to be excused from the table when we're done eating)?” At first, I could only sign “be excused” but now I can do all of it, and I'm just so proud of me (Mom and Dad say they're proud of me too!)!
I have lots of words I can say too, and people comment on my big vocabulary all the time. I just love to talk all the time, and to whomever will listen!
I also really like to use good manners, and try to always remember to say “Please” Thank You” and “You're Welcome.” I really like saying “Bless You” too when someone sneezes. Mommy says she's proud of my good manners and that sure makes me happy!
And, the most exciting news...I'm learning how to swim! I've been taking lessons for a couple months now with my daddy and I have learned so much. I can go underwater, jump off the wall, hold onto the wall by myself and kick, kick kick! I just love being in the pool and hearing Mommy, Grandma and Z all cheer me on (I just really love water of any kind, and love it when Mommy and Daddy takes me to the splash park or the pool!)! Mommy and Daddy say that next year I get to be ion a class on my own. I really love being in the pool with my daddy, but to be able to swim on my own, just like Z would be SO awesome!
And, of course, I still love being happy and you'll often find me laughing or smiling about something. I hear the work 'ornery' a lot around me, and I do try really hard to be good, but I just get so curious about things and want to just experience everything! I mean how should I know that putting my shoe in the toilet or coloring the back of the dining room chairs or trying to eat an ant are bad things?? So, I'm living and learning and doing it my own way. :o)
So, I think that catches you up with me and I promise to try to update you more often!
I gotta go...the bath is calling my name! :0)

Family Campout-2010!

So, we just got back from another fabulous family campout here in Oregon, at Fishermen's Bend! You might remember last year's post about the campout (and how stinkin' HOT it was).
We, of course, all had an awesome time! We got to go rafting, play on the playground, go for bike rides, nature walks, and of course lots of fun family time! Nighttime meant sitting around the campfire visting with family, telling stories (and some pretty bad jokes!) and eating way too many s'mores.
And, guess what? We packed up for camping in our new (to us) GMC Yukon. We have been wanting an SUV for awhile now, and with a trip to Disneyland fast approaching (October...yippee!!), we decided it was time. I have to say it was SO much easier to pack up with this bad boy and I'm already loving it!
So, here's some (ok, probably way too many) camping photos for your enjoyment...

Summertime Fun

So, I know I've been a bit lax in the blogging department recently. To be honest, I figured not many people actually read this anyway (Hi, Mom!) but I actually got a nice email from one of my 'readers' (a non-relative!) asking what we've been up to. Yeah, kind of surprised me too, so I thought I'd actually write something to appease all of my other readers (Hi, Dad!).
So, we kicked off Summer with a fun trip to The Wildlife Safari. This place is SO much fun, and the kids had never been (Colin and I were last there on our anniversary...when I was pregnant with Z!), so it was definitely on our Summer to-do list. It's a pretty long drive, by far the longest we've taken the kids, but they did great. We heard a few, “Are we there yets?” from Z, but nothing make-you-want-to-jump-out-of-the-moving-car bad. Well, we had a blast! We saw some really awesome animals pretty close up, and the kids loved seeing animals they had never seen before. It was a great learning experience too (more for Z than A) who had to cross-reference all the animals we encountered with the guide we picked up, then ask us to read him all the facts about it. We are certainly going to go back sometime soon!

Some affectionate zebra!

This guy decided he would be a nice roadblock for us!

Colin and I have also been striving to find fun activities to do with the kiddos, without breaking the bank. One sunny weekend (after much too much Summer rain!) we decided to head over to The Ankeny Wildlife Refuge, which is just about a 10 min drive from our house. I'm not sure how I've managed to not go there during all the time I've lived in this area! We packed a light lunch, sunscreen, binoculars and a borrowed bird book and hit the trail. While we didn't see a lot of wildlife, what we did see was pretty fun. The kiddos enjoyed chasing frogs, watching dragonflies skim the water, quacking back at the woodland ducks and we even spotted an adorable deer (who was clearly wondering what the heck we were doing in his neck of the woods!). They also enjoyed just running, running, running! It was some great old-fashioned, free fun!

And, probably the most recent fun activity we enjoyed was picking strawberries! I've always said I could never move away from Oregon, because of the abundance of amazing berries, fruits and vegetables we have. One of my favorite times of year is strawberry picking time. When I was a kid, I used to actually pick strawberries to earn money for the State Fair. I loved it! I wanted my kids to feel that excitement too, so every year since Z was a baby, we've taken them strawberry picking. Z has gotten better and better over the years, and this year I was able able to let him pick on his own. It was so neat to look over and see him picking right next to me. Avalee, well, she picked too, but none of her berries ended up in the bowls. ;o) She was having the time of her life out there, just picking and eating, eating and picking. I think she would have happily stayed out there forever, if we had let her. And, what did we do with all of our strawberries, you ask? We made strawberry and strawberry/banana jam, smoothies, homemade strawberry shortcake...and of course just enjoyed delicious strawberries with breakfast, lunch and dinner every day!

Last weekend was our family reunion. You may remember from previous posts that my mom and I put our reunion together every year. Mom has been doing it for, well, ever since I can remember, and I have just sort of grown up with it. It is a lot of work, but really a lot of fun too! We rent an area in a local campground (where we have our annual campout too) and are there all day. Mom and I have a little mini-carnival set up for the kids; sucker pull, beanbag toss, facepainting, fishing booth, etc. The kids are all issued (fake) money in little baggies with their names on them, and use it to play the games. At the end, we have prizes (toys, books, etc that we buy) they can buy with the rest of their money. The kids love it! We also have a raffle for everyone (three different 'age groups'; adults, young kids, older kids) with items that people donate. Then we have piƱatas for everyone (again, a pinata for every age group, even adults), which is always a blast. At the end of the day, we do bingo for anyone that's left. This year's reunion turned out great, and the kids had so much fun playing with their cousins, running around and enjoying all the activities. :)

Avalee collected a few goodies playing the games ;o)

And, we are working on a backyard makeover right now, which has been taking up most of our weekends (well, the ones that we actually have free). We are still in the beginning stages, but so far the hubby has got to drive a backhoe and tear up the entire backyard. :o) Our next step, is to put in a retaining wall (a big one), then some grass (either seed or hydroseed) and then some plants and/or trees (I'm thinking blueberry bushes!). It's already been a lot of work (mostly for my poor hubby who has been digging and shoveling for the last month) and will be a lot more, but hopefully will look pretty darn awesome when we're done with it!

Z helping Dad drive the backhoe

Next month will be our annual family campout, and we are all so looking forward to it (though, no one more than Z!) and then the Oregon State Fair. Hopefully, we'll be able to squeeze a few more adventures in too, before Summer ends!

The Story Of Us

So, for those of you that don't know how Colin and I came to be, here's our story...
During high school, Colin and I were both involved in a Summer marching band program, Argonauts (I know, I know...you're thinking I'm always calling Colin a geek, and here I am admitting to not only being in a marching band, but a Summer marching band?? Well, I was one of the cool ones. Really. Ask anyone.), and both joined the Summer of 1993. I knew of Colin from seeing him over the years, but didn't actually know him (we went to different high schools, although we were in the same year). The last two years I was in Argonauts, he was the drum major, so I observed him a little more, but just thought of him as the shy, geeky drum major

In '95, which was my last year in Argo, the phone rang at home and my dad announced the name on the caller ID (how cool was that caller ID, huh?). “Oh, that's our drum major” I say and answer from the corded phone (stick with me here people, this was '95, remember). I just figured he was calling with some official band thing, but when he started stammering and asking if I had a boyfriend, I realized this was more of a personal call. I quickly switched to the cordless phone, and moved into my bedroom. He asked me if I would go with him to the junior prom. I thought as quickly as a 17 year old could, and told him I would think about it and to call me back. I decided it just would be too awkward for us to go to the prom together, since we barely knew each other. But, he was so sweet and I realized I really did want to get to know him better. So, when he called back, I nicely turned down his prom request, but suggested we go on a date instead. I could tell he was disappointed, but he agreed it might be uncomfortable going to the prom together not knowing each other. He promised to call me back soon for a date... Well, I waited and waited and waited. Weeks went by, than a month and another! My friends who were pretty surprised when I told them we were going to go out (as I mentioned, he was shy, reserved and pretty geeky. I was loud, outgoing and boisterous) were having a great time pointing out every time he looked my direction in band practice. “He's looking at you, he's looking at you!!” and after about 20 of these, I would relent and finally look in his direction and they would get all giggly making him squirm and look all embarrassed.

Well, finally after two months, he called me and asked me out on a date; we were going to see Apollo 13 at the theater downtown. I arrived for our date, late as usual (I am and have always been one of 'those' people who show up late to everything) and didn't see him anywhere. Finally I see him walking up the sidewalk, and found out he had been there for about a half hour just walking around and around the building, afraid I was going to stand him up. Oops!

We got into the theater and started talking, and I realized he was such a fun person! He was sweet and funny and so smart. He had me laughing immediately, which I loved. And, I realized I never knew how dang cute he was! I was just seeing those big glasses and the preppy clothes, but once I got to know him and really look at him, I realized he was one handsome guy!
Sometime during the movie, he asked to hold my hand (I know...awwww, right??) and I happily obliged. :o) After the movie, his mom picked us up (no drivers licenses for either of us yet) and took me home. At our next practice, he asked me out again, and we had another great time together.
The next day we left on tour for two weeks. I would definitely not say that dating during the tour was easy (for one thing; our 'accommodations' were usually high school gymnasiums which meant well all bunked together, which meant him seeing me all grungy and grumpy at 6AM) , but it really gave us the chance to get to know each other. Hours spent on the bus between cities meant hours of chatting. At the end of the two weeks, he had to fly out to attend drum major camp at UO (at least if I was going to date a geek, I got the King of Geeks, right?) while we came back home by bus. I found myself really missing him, and couldn't wait to see him again.

Well, 15 years later and I still feel that way. I still miss him when we're not together, and can't wait to see him again. We still talk for hours, about everything and nothing. He still makes me laugh unexpectedly. And, I still think he's the cutest geek ever, but now I get to see that reflected in our children.

We've both changed over the years; we've evolved, matured. And, we've been through a lot together; lots of moves, a few jobs, loss of loved ones, and the births of our children.

Through it all, we've loved each other the same...

And, in the end I'm still the girl who gets to hold hands with the boy.

Conversations with Zavion...

I love my boy. Love, love LOVE!! He is just one of the most amazing, creative, talented, thoughtful, loving person I have ever known. And, I love the things he comes up with. He is so incredibly smart and inquisitive, and it makes me proud that he loves learning as much as he does.
I truly wish I could write down all the wonderful questions he asks or the awesome conversations we have, but there just isn't enough time in the day! So, here are some of his most recent...

Why is the sky blue?

Mom, you will always be in my heart (Umm...swoooon, right??).

Mom, who made the sky? And, who made the clouds? And, who made space?

Guys, Baryonyx (dinosaur) is the worst meat-eater yet! Good thing he's dead. I wouldn't want him to eat us!

Z: Are dogs meat?
C: Yeah, they have meat on them.
Z: Then, why don't we eat dogs?

Colin and Z were arguing about something Z was trying to get just right...
C: Nobody's perfect, Z.
Z: Uh-huh! Mom is!
