A Week Of Zavion (better late than never!):The Arrival

I know, I know...I promised a whole week of blogs dedicated to Zavion like two weeks ago. Well, as it turns out, I didn't have as much time on my hands during our vacation as I thought. I know, crazy, right? I also thought I might be able to blog during the drive, but a certain little girl we all know decided to go on nap strike during the road trip.
Then, I thought I could do some blogging after we got back, but had to get right into getting Z's party finished. I guess I need to work on time management a little.
Sooo, here it is. A little later than promised, yes, but still just as good.

At about 11:30 PM on October 18th, I started to feel my first real contractions. Some would say (and by some, I most mean Colin) labor was brought on by me doing a little construction work. I know you're just dying to know what construction work I would be doing just days away from my due date, so I'll take a little side trip for you. So, our bonus room was being finished for our office (which had previously been in the new nursery) and I decided I needed to get rid of the ugly gold threshold outside the door (since the room was unfinished when we bought it, it was considered 'outside' which is why there was a threshold there). Anyway, I grabbed the crowbar and hammer and got to work! I remember feeling awesome and not at all like I was hours from going into labor, so Colin could be onto something there, but I guess we'll never know. ;o)
So, back to those contractions... They were still pretty far apart, so I decided to take a nice long shower (I wanted to make sure I was smelling good for the doctors and nurses, after all!). After my shower, Colin suggested we try to get some sleep and told me to wake him up when the contractions were about 10 minutes apart, so he could start getting everything ready. Of course, he fell asleep right away but tried as I might, I just couldn't sleep. It was the excitement, and the contractions too, of course (plus, I had to use the potty with every contraction!)! I wasn't really timing the contractions, because it seemed they started so far apart, but then I began to realize they were much closer than before! I started timing and realized they were coming about five to sic minutes apart...oops! I woke up Colin and he was a little freaked out that I waited so long to tell him, but then immediately went into Super-Hubby mode, and got us out the door in no time. As we headed out though, he told me we needed to stop to get gas. What?? Who doesn't have a full tank of gas just days away from the delivery date of their first child?? Well, that would be Colin. So, after a quick trip through the gas station (which I had to videotape because of the absurdity of it all!), we were headed to the hospital.
Once we got there, we had to get checked in (the procrastinators that we both are never pre-registered). At this point, the contractions were on top of each other, and I thought we might even have a baby soon. The person who checked us in kept looking at me funny, than finally asked, “Are you even in active labor now?” I was like, “Uh, yea” and she said she wasn't sure because I looked so calm and didn't look like I was in any pain. Haha! I guess my high threshold for pain and poker face really came into play there.
After checking in, it was off to triage to be evaluated. The nurse checked my contractions, and was a little startled that they were only about two minutes apart. She then checked me and was even more surprised that I was only 1 1/2cm dilated. At that point it was about 6AM, and I had been in labor about six and a half hours. The nurse got me hooked up, so she could monitor my contractions then left the room. After awhile she came back in, and seemed very concerned. She asked if I was okay, like something had happened. Well, obviously I was in labor so not entirely “ok” but it didn't seem like anything unusual. She then showed us a readout of the contractions I had been having and about every third contraction was, as she put it, “off the chart.” She seemed convinced that I would much more dilated now, so checked again but there was no change. She left the room to consult with someone, and we assumed we would be sent home. But, when she came back, she said they had a room ready and would be moving me soon.
We were officially checked in at about 8AM. The nurses asked about pain management, and I told them I wasn't opposed to an epidural (had been about nine hours in labor, at that point)! We agreed that the epidural would be ordered, but they wouldn't rush it. However, about a half hour later the anesthesiologist came in to administer it. He was getting ready to do a c-section, and if he didn't get the epidural to me then I would have to wait a couple more hours!
Meanwhile, Colin was calling all of our family and friends and within a half hour our room was full. We had all four of our parents, my brother and sister, grandma and my best friend. It was definitely a nice distraction having everyone there to hang out with (we even put in a movie)! After hours of not much progress though, I was definitely starting to get impatient.
Once my doctor arrived, she started me on pitocin and seemed confident that might get things moving faster. She casually mentioned a c-section as a possibility, but indicated she didn't think it would come to that. After another couple hours though, I still hadn't progressed. My blood pressure kept dropping and then the baby's heart rate dropped a little. It had been almost 20 hours in labor at that point, when my doctor brought in the head of surgery. She checked me and said I was even less dilated then the nurses had thought and ordered an emergency c-section. She and my doctor were both very calm, but not me! I was frustrated, disappointed and just utterly exhausted. My doctor assured me everything would be fine and that the c-section was so fast that we would be meeting our baby in no time. Our family came in so we could tell them what was happening, then I had to say goodbye to Colin who couldn't come in while they were prepping me for surgery.
Besides being nervous, emotional and anxious to meet our little guy I was also extremely loopy from the medicine they game me. I kept telling Colin he was not to let me fall asleep because I was not going to miss my little Zavion being born. So, he had to keep patting my face to keep me awake during the surgery. It seemed like both an eternity and then not, all at the same time! My doctor and the surgeon were narrating what was going on, then suddenly they stopped talking. Then the next thing we heard was Zavion crying and they held up this tiny, squirmy beautiful baby boy! Colin and I were so overwhelmed with happiness and we just kept saying we couldn't believe he was finally here! They brought him over and handed him to Colin and I got to stroke his tiny face with my finger and give him long awaited kiss.
Then, they whisked he and Colin off to the recovery room, where I would join them after they finished the surgery. It felt like an eternity waiting to go be with them and I remember I kept looking behind me at the clock to see how long it was taking. The anesthesiologist kept asking me if I was okay!
After what seemed like forever, they told me I was done and wheeled me into recovery. I looked all around and didn't see Colin or Zavion anywhere and actually started to panic a little. Then, they opened up the curtain and there sat Colin holding Z. It was one of those images that will stay with me forever, and I still get emotional just remembering.
The next few days were a whirlwind of learning, attempting to sleep, lots of crying (mostly the baby) lots of visitors and some really special moments with just the three of us.
Later, my doctor told me the reason for the c-section; Zavion was in a breech position, face up, and his chin was actually hooked over my pubic bone. She told me with the way that he was positioned, there was no way he would have progressed down the birth canal.
I am definitely thankful for modern medicine and after I saw Zavion, I quickly let go of any disappointment I with not having a 'regular' birth experience.
So, that's the story of our our little guy made his entrance into the world. He made the delivery interesting for sure, and has been making our lives just as exciting ever since!

So, it turns out all of the baby photos of Z are stuck on some CDs that can't be opened on my computer. So, here is one of my favorite baby pics of Z, and hopefully I can add more later. :)

A Week of Zavion: How Z Came To Be...

So, I promised you a 'Week of Zavion” in honor of his upcoming fifth birthday. I'm kicking it off with the story of how we discovered we were pregnant with him, and the pregnancy in general...

Part I:
So, it all started with a case of food poisoning. Colin and I were both hit pretty hard with it, and I had been out of work for a few days. Colin was feeling better, and I was still, well, taking up residence on the bathroom floor. Colin suggested taking a pregnancy test, and I just blew him off, reminding him that I had a much weaker immune system than he.
On the fourth night, I was feeling much better, so Colin suggested we go get pizza for dinner. We headed over to Paddingtons Pizza, a really yummy pizza parlor a couple blocks away. After just a couple bites of my pizza, I realized I was still not feeling so hot. Colin said that was it and we were going to get a pregnancy test at the store. I didn't argue this time, because even I was thinking in the back of my mind that it just didn't make sense that food poisoning would be sticking around so long.
So, we headed across the street to WalMart and Colin decided to run in for the test. “Grab me some crackers!” I called out after him.
Pregnancy test in hand, we headed back home. I wondered if I should take it right then, and Colin answered we a resounding, “yes!” Haha. So, the plan was I would pee on the little stick but then wait for Colin so we could read it together. So, I did the first part, then set the stick down so it could do it's thing. Almost immediately I couldn't help noticing that it started changing , and try as I might to not look I just couldn't help take a peek. I saw two of the most pink, bold lines staring up at me. I could barely contain my excitement enough to even wash my hands and was trying so hard not to let out squeals. I couldn't, however, keep the crazy grin off of my face I I left the bathroom.
I could tell Colin knew by the look on my face, but I still managed to get out, “Hey, Daddy” Then we both squealed and jumped around and hugged. Colin, of course, had to say, “I told you so!” but it was a good time for him ti be right. :o) Then, he immediately went into 'Super-Hubby' mode and asked what I needed. Suddenly I felt great, no nausea! I told him he could get me a candy bar, then suggested another pregnancy test, just to be sure. He came back with a couple different candy bars, and a double-pack pregnancy test. I decided to take both pregnancy tests (can you say paranoid??) while Colin made some virgin margaritas and kettle corn. Of course, both tests came out just as positive as the first, and I was satisfied it was all for real!

Part 2:
After anxiously awaiting a pregnancy test at the doctor, it was confirmed I was seven weeks pregnant. Colin went with me to the appointment and we were able to hear our baby's heartbeat for the first time! We were excited and overwhelmed with joy. We decided to wait to share the news with everyone though, until we got to 11 weeks in the pregnancy. My OB/GYN told us that after that point in the pregnancy, anything that would have gone would have already happened. So, paranoid as we (more me) were, we decided waiting to tell grandparents (and aunts and uncles) that their first grandchild was on the way.
At times, it seemed like those four weeks were flying by and at other times it was torture not telling anyone. There were so many occasions where it would have been more than appropriate to tell my mom or my best friend. Near the end of the 11 weeks, we ended up at an impromptu get-together with our best friends. These get-togethers usually involved alcohol, and sure enough when the adult beverages came out, we had no choice. I tried discreetly saying I couldn't drink right then, but my best friend knows me too well and figured it out immediately. After some screaming and hugging, it felt so good to finally have someone else who knew!
We wanted to do something special to tell the grandparents, aunts and uncles. Everyone had been waiting for awhile for us to have a baby, so we wanted to let them know in a big way.
We decided we would have them over for dinner and after dinner we would serve them customized fortune cookies. Colin and I worked all day on making (homemade) fortune cookies and adding our own fortunes. So, Colin's parents and my parents plus my sister and brother came over and after dinner we served the dessert. We told them it was a custom that everyone had to open their cookies at once (and to throw them off, even had our own cookies that we added fortunes for each other). The fortunes were customized for each person; The grandparents said, “I see diaper changes in your future”, “I see babysitting in your future”, my siblings said, “If you play your cards right, you could be the favorite uncle” and “Better brush up on your nursery rhymes.” On the back, the lucky numbers was the due date. Everyone seemed to read their fortunes a few times, and it was my brother who seemed to figure it out first. Then, it was a cacophony of “Are you...??” “Really” and of course more hugging.

So, that's how it all started. I am going to try very hard to get some more posts up here for the rest of the week. We are on vacation right now, so it's a little difficult to squeeze blogging time in between trips to Disneyland, but I'm going to try! :o)

A Change Of Seasons...

So, I know I've been a little slacky (I know that's totally not a word, but I like to add an “y” sound to the end of things, to make it sound more fun) with the bloggin' lately. I wish I could say I have a really awesome excuse, like I was abducted by aliens or I was discovered by someone important and have been on the road doing my 'gig' (not sure what I was discovered for, but that's beside the point) or I decided to join a nunnery (but was of course kicked out, because of that whole 'vow of silence' thing). But, nope, I was just lazy and actually, a bit busy doing normal stuff. So, what have we been up to the last month? Well, we got a surprise visit from my little brother and his girlfriend who came up from LA. We spent a fun few days hanging out with them; going to the state fair, having some nice family meals and some late night video game playing (okay, so the last one was just the four of us). A great time was had by all!
Then, we finished up Summer with a fun trip to the coast and, like I said some time at the Oregon State Fair. I can't believe Summer is already over, but here we are about three weeks into Fall.
The first week of Fall here was actually just gorgeous, with temps in the 80s, so it was hard to get into the mindset of Fall. But, although Summer is by far, my favorite season there are lots of things I love about Fall. The crisp, clean air, beautiful colorful leaves, the start of football season (go Ducks!) and of course my two favorite guys' birthdays.
In fact, I usually think of the end of Summer as the end of all the crazy busyness for awhile. Really though, Fall is just as busy with football weekends, birthdays (there are only 11 days between Colin's and Zavion's birthday) and holidays. And, of course as the crazy party planner that I am, I usually spend most of September and October working on Zavion's birthday party.
This year, it's even more hectic because we are planning our trip to Disneyland...leaving next weekend! We will be there on Zavion's fifth birthday, and are all (Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt CC are coming too) so very excited!
So, I'm still planning on that 'Week of Zavion' I promised you in my previous post so stay tuned for that! And, of course be on the lookout for post Disneyland posts too. :o)
Here are a few pics of what we've been up to...

Do you Swag?

Search & Win

Do you Swag? Do you think I'm crazy and/or wonder what in the name of Twinkies I'm talking about??
Well, here's the scoop (and, I'm taking this description off the actual site, because they can explain it better. Not to worry, I will later explain it in my terms):
Swagbucks.com is the web's premier rewards site. Powered by Prodege LLC, Swagbucks.com allows web users to earn virtual currency by doing the things they do every day - search the web, shopping at their favorite retailers, and by engaging in other activities such as phone recycling, submitting polls, and completing special offers. Swagbucks.com is the only place on the web to get what you want without ever having to spend a dime.

So, what does that mean? Well, basically you get paid to search! Yup, you heard me right. So, instead of using Google or Yahoo or whatever other search engine you use, use Swagbucks and earn points just for searching. You can then use these points to 'buy' prizes from their site. There's a little of everything for everyone; Toy Story stickers for the kiddos, video game equipment for dad, perfume for mom and the list goes on! I personally have been using mine to buy Amazon.com gift cards, which I'll use for Christmas gifts (there are other gift cards as well). I mean, how cool is that? You can get free stuff just by doing what you already do!
And, if you sign up using my referral code, I win every time you win! So, see...it's a win-win for both of us!
So, what are you waiting for...start Swagging (this link will take you directly to my referral sign up page)!!

Conversations with Zavion...

It's hard to believe my little man will be FIVE next month! And, also hard to believe I've been doing these since he was three! Wow, time has just flown by and while I sometimes wish I could just freeze everything, I am really enjoying watching him grow and learn.

So, stay tuned for next month's special feature 'A Week Of Zavion.' I'm planning on blogging about my special guy every day of his birthday week, so Sun Oct 17th to Sun Oct 24th (his birthday is the 19th). I have lots of fun blogs planned, so make sure to some back to check it out!

In the meantime...here's your latest Conversations with Zavion...

Z: I'd like to live in an apple tree.

M: Ok...why?

Z: Because it would be fun to live in an apple tree.

M: Why would it be fun to live in an apple tree?

Z: Because if you water the tree, you will get lots of apples and then you can eat apples all the time. You could eat your own house!!

Z: Mom, I want to be a car fixer when I grow up. I think people need car fixers, like if their air conditioning breaks or if their wheel falls off. Do you think car fixers make lots of money?

M: Hmmm...I don't know... But, how about a lawyer? They make lots of money! (Hey, a mom has to try right?)

Z: Ok, but what does a lawyer do?

M: Uhh...they argue with other lawyers & help people (It was the best I could do on the spot!)

Z: Well, I don't want to make people mad! 'Cause when I argue with you, I make you mad!

Z: Ewww!! Something stinks!

M: Yea, I think Avalee just pooped.

Z: I think Avalee just downloaded a game called, 'Stink Up the Room!'

Diary of Miss Avalee Apryl

Goodness, I guess it's been awhile since I've written in my diary! I've just been so busy lately, with Summer and all, I just haven't had much extra time!
So, let's see...where should I start? Well, how about that I'm a big girl now, like really big! When I had my last checkup in June, I weighed over 26lbs and was 33 ½” tall (they say that's 92% for height and 82% for weight...whatever all that means!). I'm tall enough to reach on the counters and on the dining room table now. And, when I use the kitchen stool, it's even better, 'cause I can reach the back of the counter! Mommy doesn't seem to happy about this, but it's really opened up some doors for me!
I'm also big enough now that I can really hold my own against my big brother! He tries to push me around sometimes, but I'm pretty tough and don't let him get away with much. I can even wrestle and play 'Tackle, Tackle' with my daddy and Z. I've gotten really good at my signature flying off the couch onto Daddy tackle!
I also love helping Mommy do chores. When she does the dishes, I try to help by rearranging the plates around or licking the extra yogurt off the spoons she forgot to rinse (silly Mommy!). Sometimes she gets frustrated (I'm not sure at who...or why...) so I shut the dishwasher door for her, to try to give her a little break. I even put away my own dishes after I'm done eating, just like my big brother!
I also like helping Mommy do the laundry. I hand her the clothes to put in the washer and she hands me the clothes to put in the dryer. Mommy always says I'm a really good helper and that she's proud of me (sometimes I try even extra hard to help and put extra fun stuff in the dryer when Mommy is distracted...)!
I really like doing everything on my own, and would rather not have anyone help me. From feeding myself to reading books to putting on my socks; I just like doing it all by myself! Mommy says I'm still little and need help, but she does let me feed myself now with my own spoon or fork! Sometimes I get a little messy, but Mommy usually cleans me up pretty quickly. Otherwise, I usually just wipe my face on my brother's shirt or the couch cushions.
I am really into reading now! I've gotten a few new books, but I also like going in my brother's room and raiding his cool library! I get special reading time at naps and bedtime, but Mommy and Daddy (and even Z) will always take time to ready to me anytime I want too. Sometimes, I just look through the book on my own, and even have a couple of my favorite books memorized.
I know probably about 30 signs now too (Mom and Dad teach me ASL, just like they taught Z)...maybe more. Some of the signs I regularly use are; Eat, Milk, Baby, Please, Thank You, Sorry and Book. I usually say these and sign them together. I have started to string some of the signs together now, and Mom and Dad even taught me to sign “May I please be excused (we have to ask to be excused from the table when we're done eating)?” At first, I could only sign “be excused” but now I can do all of it, and I'm just so proud of me (Mom and Dad say they're proud of me too!)!
I have lots of words I can say too, and people comment on my big vocabulary all the time. I just love to talk all the time, and to whomever will listen!
I also really like to use good manners, and try to always remember to say “Please” Thank You” and “You're Welcome.” I really like saying “Bless You” too when someone sneezes. Mommy says she's proud of my good manners and that sure makes me happy!
And, the most exciting news...I'm learning how to swim! I've been taking lessons for a couple months now with my daddy and I have learned so much. I can go underwater, jump off the wall, hold onto the wall by myself and kick, kick kick! I just love being in the pool and hearing Mommy, Grandma and Z all cheer me on (I just really love water of any kind, and love it when Mommy and Daddy takes me to the splash park or the pool!)! Mommy and Daddy say that next year I get to be ion a class on my own. I really love being in the pool with my daddy, but to be able to swim on my own, just like Z would be SO awesome!
And, of course, I still love being happy and you'll often find me laughing or smiling about something. I hear the work 'ornery' a lot around me, and I do try really hard to be good, but I just get so curious about things and want to just experience everything! I mean how should I know that putting my shoe in the toilet or coloring the back of the dining room chairs or trying to eat an ant are bad things?? So, I'm living and learning and doing it my own way. :o)
So, I think that catches you up with me and I promise to try to update you more often!
I gotta go...the bath is calling my name! :0)

Family Campout-2010!

So, we just got back from another fabulous family campout here in Oregon, at Fishermen's Bend! You might remember last year's post about the campout (and how stinkin' HOT it was).
We, of course, all had an awesome time! We got to go rafting, play on the playground, go for bike rides, nature walks, and of course lots of fun family time! Nighttime meant sitting around the campfire visting with family, telling stories (and some pretty bad jokes!) and eating way too many s'mores.
And, guess what? We packed up for camping in our new (to us) GMC Yukon. We have been wanting an SUV for awhile now, and with a trip to Disneyland fast approaching (October...yippee!!), we decided it was time. I have to say it was SO much easier to pack up with this bad boy and I'm already loving it!
So, here's some (ok, probably way too many) camping photos for your enjoyment...
