These are a few of my favorite things...

Avalee is working on another diary entry, but as she is such a busy little lady, and it is taking longer than expected, I decided to let you have a peek at some of her favorite things in the meantime...

{Ok, so I'm shamelessly stealing this idea from from best friend's blog. In all fairness, I totally told her I was stealing it, and I am giving her credit (and telling you to check out her cute list over at her blog).}

So, without further ado, here ya go...

Hanging out with my big bro' at the park!

My Daddy!

My BFF, Madi!

My Mama!

Swingin' with Grandma!

Accessorizing!

The beach, especially the sand!

My brother!

And, in case you're wondering, Miss A has lots more favorite things but you'll just have to check back again soon to see...

Healthy Eaters

Zavion is such a good eater (Avalee is still getting there) that I often get asked what Colin and I “did.” I've actually been asked a few times recently how we get him to eat so well. So, I thought I might share my 'tips' here for all my readers (did anyone hear crickets?).
Here is my disclaimer: I am, by no means, an expert on healthy eating, or childhood nutrition or well, anything regarding food. I do know what has worked for us and our kids. So, if you think I'm doing something terrible wrong; keep it to yourselves. On the other hand, if you think I'm amazingly-awesome, please don't hesitate to let me know. :o) Also, I'm going to not trying to sound like I'm bragging, but if I do, just deal with it. I mean, it is my blog, and you are reading it.
So, without further ado, here goes...

1)Eat with your kids!
For me, this is so, so important and really sets the foundation for a healthy eating lifestyle. Now, I know a lot of parents prefer feeding their kids and putting them to bed, before they eat, but I would really encourage you to eat as a family. As soon as our kids could sit in the highchair, they were at the table with us. I really think it helps for your kids to see you eating, and sets a great example. I mean, if you're chowing down on carrots, you're kids are more inclined to to as well! And, besides the food part of it, I think it's also helpful for them to see how to eat. If they're with you at the dinner table, they are seeing how to use utensils, napkins, etc. It's also just a great way to connect with each other. How could you not want to hear about the adventures your four year old had that day or see the newest silly faces your one year has mastered!

2)If you want them to eat broccoli, give them broccoli!
Yeah, I know that just sounds too easy, but it really works. And, I'm not talking about being sneaky and hiding the food you want them to eat (unless you're past that 'magic' age of three...if it's not happened yet, by all means, sneak away!); I mean just give it to them. If they ask for a snack, hand them a banana or an apple. At dinner, serve up some green beans or pears. We've always just given the kids a variety of healthy things to eat for meals and snacks. Now, they may not always eat it, but they know it's the norm, and not the exception.

3)Don't force them to eat anything (I'm not sure, if this should be sub-two, but we'll just go with three anyway, 'cause I'm really diggin' the numbers.)!
We just tell the kids that they at least need to try something new. As a reformed picky eater (yea, I still have my moments), I know I hated being forced to eat something I deemed as disgusting, weird or just out of my comfort zone. So, if they don't like something, after one bite (yup, just one bite, but it does have to be what we call a 'real' bite; utensil all the way in the mouth and no food left), we don't push it. And, you know what? Most of the time, after that bite, Zavion (again, Avalee is still a little young) likes it and digs right in.

4)Instead of prohibiting the 'bad stuff' encourage the 'good stuff!'
We have never forbidden junk food, but instead really push the fruits and veggies. We rarely have junk food in the house (the Halloween bucket is usually emptied of last years stash right before trick-or-treating), but we always have apples, bananas, carrots, broccoli, etc. We stash the fruits and veggies in various places, and when it comes time for a snack, the kids usually head to the fruit bowl or the refrigerator crisper. For dessert, we'll often have sliced strawberries, or a slice of watermelon or a fresh peach. That's not to say we don't have ice cream every so often, but when we do, we try not to make a big deal about it.

5)Make it together!
Zavion has been in the kitchen with me, since he was old enough to stand. Avalee has now established her place in the kitchen as well, and I love it. I don't think it's ever “too early” to teach your kids to cook. Z started out helping me with baking stuff (Christmas cookies, cupcakes, etc), but I soon realized how much fun we were both having. He was really interested in how the food was prepared, and I found that if he 'helped' make something, he was usually more willing to eat it. I started having him help me prepare veggies for stir fry, mash up bananas for banana bread, and measure the rice. Now, I can find a job for him for just about everything; whisking, mixing, measuring (don't worry, no knives yet!).

6)Show them where the food comes from!
We've had a vegetable garden since before the kids were born, but it's now something they can help us with. Zavion has been helping in the garden since he was about one and a half, and Avalee is just getting into it (she loves her little watering can!). One of Z's favorite foods are tomatoes, so he has his own cherry tomato plant he tends to. One of my proudest moments was when he was little, and we were in the grocery store. We passed by the tomatoes, and Z asks, all wide-eyed, “Mommy, are those our 'matoes from our own garden”? I knew then that he had a good understanding of where food comes from.
Obviously not everyone can grow their own foods, but you can always take your kids to the farmer's markets, local farm, orchard, etc.

7)Make food fun!
You're not going to win them over if you serve them steamed broccoli at every meal.
I make kebabs (just alternate, cheese, fruit, lunch meat, etc) for lunch, silly faces
out of dinner (chicken eyes, green bean smile, etc), quesadillas cut into dinosaur
shapes. Just be creative, and have fun with it!

So, I know this was pretty different from my usual blog posts, but like I said, maybe it can help someone else. I hope I made some sense, and didn't sound too preachy. :o)

Diary of Miss Avalee Apryl

Wow, I've been really neglecting my diary! I can't believe I haven't written in like four months...and SO much has happened since then too.
Lets see...I had my FIRST birthday (wowza was that fun!), I started walking then running (maybe not in that order...hehe), then Christmas (MORE presents!), got to play in the snow, learned lots of new words and signs, went to the zoo for the first time... Wow, I'm one busy gal!
What else? Well, Mommy always says I'm such a little person, not so much a baby, now, so maybe I'll tell ya a little about who I am now.
I'm still a happy little lady, but a little spunkier now! I know I'm the “little sister” but I really try to push the limits on that one. ;0) Since I've become mobile, I can really keep up with my big bro' now. We chase each other around the house all the time, and I even like to wrestle with him (sometimes I can even take him down on my own!). He lets me play with his toys sometimes, but when he doesn't, I sometimes throw a big fit to try and get my way. My hope is that my brother will be forced to share (and maybe even get in trouble...just a little), but usually we both get in trouble, and Mommy just takes away the toy. I've really gotta up my cuteness to make that work better for me! Really, though, my bro' and I love each other sooo much and I just think he's the coolest. He gives me rides on my cool car all over the house, shares bathtime with me, gives me lots of love when I get owies and sneaks yummy food to me when Mom's not lookin' (shhh!).
I'm also kind of accident prone (Mommy says I inherit my “clumsiness” from her). :0( It seems like I'm always bumping this or falling over that. One day, I hit my head in the same place twice and ended up sporting a nice big bruise (just in time for my BFFs 1st birthday too). A few weeks later, I ran into a bench at the carousel and got a BIG bump and bruise on my head. And, just today, I fell head first onto a metal clothing rack at Target! I got a bloody (and very swollen) nose, but also lots of attention. The nice lady in the red shirt got me some milk, but all I wanted to do was sleep (which made Mommy nervous, so she called my doctor to make sure I would be okay...and I am).
I really love animals, pretty much all animals, but my favorites are doggies, kitties and cows. I'm learning the sounds animals make, but I like to be silly and “mooo” for all of them!
Reading has become a passion of mine, which seems to make Mama really happy. I love to read all my books (and Z's too) over and over (sometimes, I just want Mom to read to me all day)! Luckily, Mommy reads a few books at every nap and bedtime, and that makes me very happy. My favorite books right now are, “The Nose Book,” “Night, Night, Little Pookie” counting books and any of the Usborne, “That's Not My _____”
The newest development to make me happy is...Spring! I really don't know what it is exactly, but I do know the sun is out more, it's not as cold, and there are pretty flowers everywhere! Mommy takes us for walks, to the park and to have lunch with Daddy more now too...yippee!
Well, I think that just about catches you up on me! I promise to try to write more diary entries and keep you updated on what's goin' on. :0)

Welcome to the world, Donovan!!

I posted previously that my SIL and BIL were pregnant for the first time. Well, on Ceara's birthday, 12 days before her due date, her water broke! We were all anxious for the new babe to arrive and find out the gender and name...
Two days later, at 3:30 AM, Donovan Turner arrived; 7.3lbs and 20 inches long!!
Of course, I think he's adorable (and looks just like both Mom and Dad!) and am a very proud Aunt!! We're working on planning a trip to see the new family in a couple months, and I can't wait to hold the little guy!
Congrats Ceara and Grant!!!

Zoo day!

Friday, we decided a trip to the zoo was in order. Colin had the day off and the weather promised to be nice, so we met Grandma and all headed off to the zoo!
The weather didn't disappoint, as it was in the 70s and sunny; not too hot or cold.
Z was so excited, since he couldn't remember that last time he had been (it's been over a year!). He kept telling us he was going to see 'the apes', and couldn't be deterred, even when we told him we didn't think there were apes. Of course, the first thing you see when you walk in are mountain goats. Really? Mountain goats? But, all the kids rush right over to “ooh and aah” over them because they're so darn excited to be there (and most of them aren't sure what to expect, so they see an enclosure with animals and they go nuts). And, I think it's the zoo's way of preparing us parents too; ready, set...try to keep up!
And it was Avalee's first trip ever, so we were all really excited to see her reactions to all the wild animals. Her favorite animals though? Cows, ducks and chickens. We went to the zoo to see all the exotic animals, and she loves the ones we can see down the street. LOL! She did love lots of other animals, and it was really cute to watch her so excited and pointing at the zebras, giraffes and monkeys. Unfortunately, she missed out on the elephants, since she fell asleep just as we were going into the elephant area (super-cute baby elephant too!). But, she woke up at the lions and was all refreshed for the rest of the day. :0)
We packed a picnic lunch, and stopped after awhile to eat and enjoy the sun. We noticed Z was dragging a bit, and was also coughing a lot. I was a little worried, but he was such a trooper! He never complained or whined, even when he was so obviously tired (and Mom forgot his PB&J sandwich...GASP.! BIG Mommy no-no!) After we saw it all, and pushed our visit to the last half hour before being kicked out, we headed to the gift shop. Normally, I'm not a big souvenir buyer, but Z found a really cool dinosaur mask and the pricetag of $3.99 seemed pretty reasonable, so I told him he could get it. He handed it to me, and said he wanted to go outside. I thought he was just hot, but he said he wanted to go to sleep! Sure enough, within ten minutes of driving off, poor guy was out!
I was hoping he'd be feeling better after a long nap, but unfortunately he was worse. :0( He's been sick since then, so we've spent a lot of time on the couch snuggling and watching movies. I'm just glad we got the zoo trip in, because he had so much fun! I'm just hoping he start feeling better soon, with Easter right around the corner.

Mooooo!

Pirate bedroom makeover; Days 4 & 5...

So...we finished the murals!! We had to ditch the kiddos Friday night (actually they had a blast hanging out with Grandma and Grandpa), so we could really get to work. Colin worked on the ship, and I got to work on the treasure map. I also realized, as I was stressing out about my sure the pirate map looked perfectly imperfect, that there was a reason Colin was doing the majority of the work. As I've mentioned in previous blogs, I can be a bit...umm...of a control freak. Yup, it's true. So, the drawing, painting, etc that Colin did in a week would have taken me a month! Now, I'm by no means saying I would have done a better job, but I would have obsessed about every tiny detail of everything. There may have been some tears, certainly some yelling and perhaps a diva-like fit (“I can't work like this!”) or two (or five). So, Colin made the smart decision to take it on and give me a much smaller project...the treasure map. Of course, as you'll see in the following photos, I still managed to get a little crazy doing even that...
Now that the murals are done, my mom has been working on painting all the trim in the room (it had previously been painted to match the accent colors in Z's 'old' room, so needed to be painted over). Colin is also working a cool sandy beach/island that is going to look awesome! And, I still have to do a few extras for the room, although I think I may have to put that off until next week (because I'm doing a big baby sale this weekend).
So, stay tuned for the final room reveal!!

Yup, this is me obsessing about making it look perfectly distressed

If you never did, you should. These things are fun and fun is good.

So, Dr. Seuss' birthday was last week, and we just had to celebrate one of our favorite authors! After some confusion on Z's part... “But, how can Dr. Seuss come to the party if he's dead.??”...the 'celebration' got underway.

Of course, one has to have green eggs and ham! All along, Z said he would eat it, but then he chickened out. What a stinker! He did try a bite of the green deviled eggs I made, but that was it (he really isn't a big egg eater anyway though) but would not, could not touch the green ham. I ended up making sandwiches with the ham, and he insisted on non-green ham. LOL!

The inside view of my green ham panini!

Pink Ink!
If you have a lot of ink, then you should get a Yink, I think.

*Note to self: Don't get so carried away that you end up giving your kid (who rarely gets sugar) an entire glass of pink lemonade...yikes (luckily I convinced him to use the rest of his drink to make some cool ice cubes...whew!)!!

And, my attempt at cute cupcakes. I actually think it turned out okay, although I was a little disappointed I could only make one (turns out, those little rolls of Life Savers are impossible to come by nowadays, and the bags of mixed only had three red!).

So, it was a little work, but so much fun! Reading is such a huge part of our lives, and I love how passionate both of my kids are about reading. Dr. Seuss books are really spectacular, and so much fun for any age. I encourage everyone out there to read, read read to your kids as much and as often as possible, because...

”The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

So, I guess I'll have to come up with something different for next year... And, if you want to have some kind of a Seuss celebration (and, why wait for an excuse??), check out the official (and amazing!) Seuss site: http://www.seussville.com/main.php?section=home&isbn=&catalogID=&eventID=
There are activities galore, fun games to play, recipes and you can even bulk up on your knowledge of the man himself, Theodor Seuss Geisel.

So, I'm curious...what's your favorite Dr. Seuss book and why?
